Who are the Indigenous Nationalities

National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN), was established, under the Chairmanship of the incumbent Prime Minister, in 2002 through an Act.

The main objective of the NFDIN, is to ensure the overall welfare of the 59 enlisted indigenous nationalities who live across the country. It is to assist janjatis in their empowerment and play the role of a bridge between the State and janjatis and make them feel included. The Foundation is an autonomous body, fully authorized to operate independently where the indigenous nationalities' interests are concerned.

The Interim Constitution of 2007, has been able to address some of the issues of indigenous nationalities by defining the country as independent, secular, inclusive, democratic and federal. Subsequently, NFDIN has been empowering the enlisted 59 indigenous communities for promotion and preservation of the religion, linguistic, cultural and political rights.  In this way, it has been playing an important role for uplift the indigenous peoples through awareness programmes, human resource development, mother tongue language documentation and income generating programmes etc.
